Seeking an enthusiastic team player willing to get their hands dirty and play an integral role as an Assistant Gardener. The incumbent will have the opportunity to be a part of a 3-person team contributing to the care and maintenance of the gardens and grounds of two distinct Nova Scotia estates. There is a Halifax property with sprawling greens, formal groupings of ornamental plants and pond with Asian fish.  This is complemented by a  country estate, outside of the city, on the Atlantic ocean, comprised of vegetable gardens, manicured and naturalized gardens, ponds and winding paths.

Duties Include:

Gardening:

  • Nurturing and beautifying these four-season properties by planting, weeding, cultivating, watering, fertilizing, pruning, shearing, raking, sweeping and more.
  • Vegetable garden duties include soil preparation, seeding, transplanting, fertilizing, irrigating, weeding and harvesting.
  • Fall and Spring seasons involve cleanups and the planting of bulbs.
  • Winter greenhouse tasks include potting, watering, propagation by seeds, cuttings and division.

Decor and Maintenance:

  • Assisting with the annual Christmas festivities, including, preparing and decorating the grounds and buildings.
  • Preparing pots and arrangements, for all four seasons, using bulbs, annuals, cut flowers and evergreen materials.
  • Supplementing snow removal contractors, as required, ensuring stairs and walk ways are free of ice/snow.

Equipment to be operated: beyond the basic garden hand tools, may include a leaf blower, garden tiller, weed torch, hedge shears, and other similar, small-engine, hand-held power tools.

This job is predominantly outdoors and has physical demands such as bending, lifting, kneeling, etc.

A sense of humour, willingness to learn, and an aesthetic eye will be highly valued!  Likewise, being personable, professional and a good communicator are important assets.
