STARTING SALARY:  $30.39 per hr

AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY:

Reporting to the Foreperson, Construction, installs and maintains City Irrigation Systems and ensures that systems are safe and well maintained, and supports the ongoing maintenance of City parks and properties.

  • Installs irrigation systems at various locations throughout the City, including sports fields, flower beds, entrance features, roadway medians, boulevards and facilities
  • Prepares estimates for quantity of parts and materials required for installation projects; obtains project quotes from 3rd party contractors
  • Performs precipitation and water consumption rate calculations and controls are utilized to maximize efficiency; gathers soil for offsite testing
  • Completes water usage calculations for the purpose of qualifying for the Region of Peel’s low volume flat rate fee program 
  • Maintains and repairs irrigation systems and components; creates service requests and work orders
  • Reviews site plans and irrigation drawings with Landscape Architects and other contractors, and makes recommendations to ensure adherence to policies, standards and legislation
  • Replaces and/or repairs broken main lines or parts due to wear and tear, defect or vandalism; retrofits as and when required to ensure maximum efficiency
  • Maintains a detailed inventory of systems and parts for both repair and asset identification purposes
  • Creates and retains build drawings for reference during repair
  • Winterizes irrigation systems, including but not limited to water shut off, removal of standing water and the testing and inspection of electronic components
  • Schedules confined space work, and monitors contractor(s) performing confined space work
  • Performs turf management and maintenance of sports fields and tableland turf grass including mowing and trimming, aeration, top-dressing, over seeding, fertilization, integrated pest management, and levelling and preparation of areas for restoration Performs salting and snow removal; installs, floods and maintains seasonal public ice rinks
  • Responsible for operational preparation and minor maintenance of all small and heavy equipment
  • Directs and coordinates day-to-day activities to temporary and part-time staff and students, instructs in the use of proper safety equipment, oversee the proper usage of tools and equipment, teaching and updating turf grass and arboriculture best practices.
  • Completion of inspection reports including daily vehicle, equipment, vendor quality assurance, sports field, flood and firework patrol.
  • Perform playground surfacing maintenance including material top-up, surface maintenance, levelling, mechanical sifting, and painting.
  • Coordinate and set-up stakeouts for identifying underground utilities
  • Installs, maintains and repairs fences, snow fences, park benches, signs, catch basins, walkways (i.e. cold patches/asphalts potholes in parks).

SELECTION CRITERIA:

• High school (Grade 12) graduation plus an additional program of over one year and up to two years or equivalent in Horticulture Science.
• Certified Irrigation Technician through the Irrigation Association is required.
• A Valid, non-probationary Ontario Class DZ driver’s licence. 
• Over two (2) years up to including four years.
• Front end loader qualification.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills with an emphasis on customer service.
• Able to work independently and as part of a team.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
